Second Woman Reportedly ‘Vanishes’ Near Niagara Falls Days After A Young Mom Deliberately Plunged Into Its Depths With Her Two Kids

Niagara Falls has a way of turning awe into heartbreak fast, and this week delivered another gut-punch. Days after a young mom, Chianti Means, reportedly plunged into the falls with her two kids, witnesses say a second woman may have gone in near Goat Island.

New York State Police spokesperson Trooper James O’Callaghan said the first incident appeared deliberate, based on witness accounts, and he confirmed they did not believe Chianti was chasing her children. Her cousin, Bierra Hamilton, later pointed to severe postpartum depression, while authorities launched an urgent search for the unidentified woman using Park Police drones, foot searches of the gorge, and lookout scans.

Two separate tragedies in the same deadly spot is the kind of pattern that makes everyone stop and stare.

That first reported plunge by Chianti Means with her two children is still fresh, and now the falls are back in the headlines for a second possible entry near Goat Island.

Trooper James O’Callaghan, spokesperson for the New York State Police, stated that the act appeared deliberate based on witness accounts. When asked if Chianti was chasing her children, O’Callaghan confirmed, “No, we believe this was intentional.”

But the heartache doesn’t end there. Just as the shockwaves from this tragedy were still reverberating in full force—another woman was reported missing near the falls. Witnesses allegedly saw this second, unidentified woman near Goat Island, and authorities are currently investigating.

“An immediate search of the area commenced using Park Police drones, foot searches of the gorge, and visual searches from overlooks,” police shared with WGRZ.

Chianti’s cousin, Bierra Hamilton, later shared that the young mother had been suffering from severe postpartum depression.

The recent tragedies at Niagara Falls reveal a troubling pattern of mental health crises affecting parents.

Trooper James O’Callaghan’s “we believe this was intentional” comment makes the timeline feel even more chilling, especially with postpartum depression mentioned by Bierra Hamilton.

This is the same kind of pressure as a pet-loving tenant challenging a landlord’s new no-pet policy.

Even as the search ramps up with Park Police drones and gorge foot patrols, the story shifts from one family’s loss to a broader question of how quickly these crises can escalate.

The National Institute of Mental Health defines postpartum depression as a mood disorder that strikes after childbirth. The symptoms range from mild sadness to overwhelming despair, leaving new mothers struggling with dark thoughts—like harming themselves or their children.

Bierra urged the public to understand the gravity of this mental health condition, saying, “Postpartum [depression] is very real and needs a cure.”

The two cases have stirred public emotion and left many grappling with the harsh reality of mental health struggles. This is not simply a tragic story of individuals, but a call for society to better understand and address the invisible battles fought daily by many among us.

Niagara Falls may be a symbol of awe-inspiring beauty, but it also highlights the powerful—and sometimes destructive—forces of nature.

As we mourn these lives, may it drive us to support one another and to build communities that are more attuned to the needs of those quietly struggling. Perhaps with that, we can save some lives along the way.

And when Bierra Hamilton urges people to take postpartum depression seriously, the tragedy stops being just a “falls” story and becomes a stark, personal one for parents everywhere.

The incidents at Niagara Falls raise critical questions about the support systems available for families in distress.

The recent tragedies near Niagara Falls underline the urgent need for enhanced mental health support systems.

The falls didn’t just take lives, they exposed how brutally fast a mental health crisis can turn a home into a nightmare.
